Medicare Insurance Options

Part A

Generally, Medicare Part A covers hospital inpatient care, care at a nursing facility, short-term care in a nursing home, hospice care, and certain home health care. If you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for a certain period, you probably won’t have to pay a premium. However, if you didn’t pay Medicare taxes while working, you may be able to purchase Medicare Part A.

Part B

Medicare Part B covers two types of services: medically necessary services or supplies needed to treat or diagnose medical conditions and preventative healthcare services. With this type of insurance, you usually don’t have to pay anything for your preventative services. However, Part B is optional, so you must pay a monthly premium to have it. Also, you may have to pay a late enrollment fee if you don’t sign up when you’re first eligible.

Part C

Private companies that Medicare approves offer Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage Plans. With Part C plans, you get the benefits of both Part A and Part B coverage. In addition, Medicare pays a set amount for your care to companies accepting Medicare Part C. Annually reviewing this type of plan is essential because the rules within your Part C plan can change each year.

Part D

Medicare Part D provides coverage for prescription drugs. It’s a federal program provided by private insurance companies. Before the establishment of Part D, many people with Medicare struggled to cover their prescription drug costs. Most Part C plans include Part D drug coverage or choose a separate Part D drug plan in addition to your Original Medicare benefits.

Supplemental Insurance

Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, helps fill in the gaps in your Original Medicare plan. With a Medigap policy, you can help pay for costs not covered in your Original Medicare plan, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. To have a Medigap policy, you must have Part A and Part B and pay a monthly premium in addition to your Part B premium.
