What Doesn’t Medicare Cover?

Medicare is an excellent option for senior citizens, but that doesn’t mean it covers everything. If you’re wondering, “What doesn’t Medicare cover?”, there are some limitations to be aware of before signing up for the program that you should know.

Senior Insurance Solutions is here to give you the information needed about Medicare. As a licensed Medicare agent, I can assist you in finding the appropriate Medicare plan for your unique needs. Let’s break down what Medicare doesn’t cover so you can make the most informed decision possible.

1. Eye Exams

Medicare doesn’t cover eye exams, glasses, or contact lenses. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer these services, but it depends. However, original Medicare does will pay for ophthalmologic expenses like cataract surgery.

2. Dental Care

If you were hoping to get dental services covered by your Medicare plan, we’re sorry to disappoint you. Similar to eye exams, some Medicare Advantage plans offer dental care. If you can’t find an Advantage plan that meets your needs, you can buy an individual dental insurance plan.

3. Podiatry

Medicare does not cover routine foot care, like removing calluses. However, if your foot problem is a result of diabetes, hammertoe, bunion deformities, or other nerve damage, Medicare Part B will cover it.

4. Chiropractic Services

Medicare does not cover chiropractic care except for manual manipulation of the spine to fix a vertebral subluxation. Some Medicare Advantage plans will cover chiropractors.

5. Cosmetic Procedures

If you want an elective cosmetic procedure, Medicare likely won’t pay for it. However, it may cover a cosmetic procedure in the event of an injury.

6. Nursing Home Care

Medicare can cover short-term stays in rehab facilities but not long-term nursing home care services. If you need assistance paying for a nursing home, Medicaid can be an effective option.

7. Massages

Everyone deserves a massage once in a while. Unfortunately, Medicare won’t pay for massages, even for therapeutic reasons. However, some Medicare Advantage plans will cover massage therapy.

8. Hearing Aids

Medicare doesn’t cover routine ear exams or hearing aids, but it will pay for ear-related medical conditions.

Medicare Solutions

Fortunately, Medicare Parts A and B cover many services like inpatient hospital care, lab tests, surgery, and doctor’s appointments. If you need services that Medicare won’t pay for, you can purchase a Medicare Advantage plan to fill in the gaps.

Navigating the world of Medicare and designing a custom plan to meet your unique needs can be challenging. On the bright side, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Senior Insurance Solutions can help you purchase a plan that makes the most sense for you so you can rest easy knowing you have coverage for the services that matter most.
